How to change status bar icons

Hello everyone, I am having trouble changing certain status bar icons. They are the stat_notify_....png's like mms, gmail, usb, alarm clock, chat, missed call, and some others. I am able to change certain other status bar icons like gps, sync, 3g, wifi, etc... I have tried placing them in systemui and framework-res folders but neither of them worked, I still ended up with the gingerbread icons upon applying the theme. I know the actual icons are located in the framework-res.apk but how do I get the theme to change them? Do I need certain information in the xml file for the change to work?

The notification icons for sms/mms and gmail are in their respective .apk's, so 'mms.apk' and 'gmail.apk'. I thought the others were in either the 'systemui.apk' or 'framework-res.apk'.
